Exploring a Past Life

by Janie J

Let me take you on a journey—where I received a glimpse of a past life in India, when I was a small boy living with my extended family in New Delhi. Here you will learn what’s truly important in life, as I did. You will realize how your perspective determines how you experience life. These are just a few of the reasons why exploring your past lives is helpful.

Asked about my past life in India. This is what I heard/felt.

You are very small, 3 or 4 years old. You are wandering the streets of New Delhi. Your grandmother calls you and you go home. You were about 3 blocks away…a long way in today’s society, but not then.

Oxen with buggies in street. Dirty water in street sides. Cobblestone. Grandma’s name is like Noni or something. We eat yellow rice -saffron. Everyone sits on floor with own bowl. Extended family – about 10 people. I am littlest except Mama has baby swaddled in cloth she wraps around herself. She wiggles baby as she stands, back and forth to comfort it. We all eat.

Mama stands. After a while Papa gets up, takes baby and Mama can eat. I’m a boy.

I have older brothers and a couple sisters. Boys are older, then 2 or 3 girls - like middle school age.

Everyone is tall and lanky, dark skinned. Girls have long hair. Can’t tell about boys. Maybe they have turbans. Papa has dark brown eyes. He watches me carefully, like he’s making sure I’m behaving right. Every once in a while, he smiles briefly and then looks back at the baby. He rocks back and forth. I sense he is a good daddy.

Oldest brother gets up. I guess he’s finished. Grandma gathers the bowls to wash them. There are some older men. I think one is grandpa and other is brother of my mom or dad. I think it’s grandma’s son, so my dad’s brother and it’s dad’s parents who live with us.

It is a small house. Floors seem dirt with a thin rug on it. Other rooms don’t all have a rug, at least not nice as this one. It’s our main room.

No running water. They carry water to house and grandma uses it to cook. She works very hard. Mama can’t do it all ‘cause she’s busy caring for children and having babies all the time. My parents are about 35-40, no more.

Dad has a job. Something with leather, like making stuff at a shop or store for the man who owns the business. We are lucky father has a job.

Grandfather seems disabled in some way. His feet don’t work right and he hobbles. He is missing teeth too, but he’s loving and kind to our big family. He’s proud of his son for taking care of everyone.

Another man comes to our house. It’s Papa’s brother. Grandparents are overjoyed!! He has wife and a baby and 2 young children. They come in. Grandma gives us a little square of a Jello-like treat. It’s yellow or red, very sweet. It’s like a tradition. Everyone is happy. We are poor by today’s standards, but we are well-loved, happy and content. Everyone knows their place and we are grateful to have shelter, food and each other.

What else do we really need? It’s a happy life, at least for now.
